Why Work From Home?

Working from home is a growing market for women. Technological advances with personal computers, the Internet and e-mail have made working at home much easier—and opened up an entire new vista of job opportunities that women of previous generations never imagined.

Women are finding that they can strike a balance between at-home work, household chores, and family life. A recent U.S. government survey found many of the 5.6 million mothers who stay home full time with young children are likely to work at some point, in either paid or volunteer employment.

Home-based businesses or at-home employment can encompass a wide variety of vocations, such as accountant, animal boarder, attorney, baker, breastfeeding consultant, calligrapher, columnist, computer engineer, database administrator, dog walker, eBay seller, garage organizer, homegrown organic food packager, inpatient coder, knitting instructor, legal transcriptionist, menu planner, novelist, photographer, proofreader, radio show host, rug maker, scrapbook supplier/teacher, travel agent, virtual assistant, and Web site designer.

Also, many women find that transitioning their current at-the-office employment into at-home work can be successful. Other women launch successful small businesses at home based on their creativity.

Other recent studies find that over the next decade, women will continue to start their own businesses, many of those out of their homes. Women from all economic, ethnic and regional demographics are embracing this alternative to working outside the home.

Working from home also provides an outlet for a woman's creativity, permitting her to use the talents and abilities God gave her. At-home employment also gives her a way to help her family's bottom line, and it allows others in the community to benefit from her skills.
